John's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named James, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada.  He was the second oldest of the seventeen children.  He died in 1858 in Bolton.¹
