May's father was Thomas Holland and her mother was Martha Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Edward Brereton and Frances Hopley. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Frank, Edward, George, James, Ellen, Mary and Annie. She was the third oldest of the nine children.
