Mary's father was Thomas Holland and her mother was Martha Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Edward Brereton and Frances Hopley. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Frank, Edward, George, James, Ellen, May and Annie. She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
