Edward's father was Thomas Holland and his mother was Martha Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Edward Brereton and Frances Hopley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Frank, George, James, Ellen, May, Mary and Annie. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
