William was born in 1832 in Tattenhall and his christening took place there on December 9th, 1832.1 2  William's father was Thomas Brereton and his mother was Martha Hughes.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton Jnr and Mary Tomlinson; his maternal grandparents were William Hughes and Mary Bennion. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, George, Thomas, Edward, Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Anne and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 81 on September 13th, 1913 in New South Wales.  His burial was in 1913 in Sydney.3 3
