Margaret
Culloo
67
67
Sometimes, incorrectly, spelt as Cullow.
Daniel and Winfred CULLOO were her parents.
Daughter Margaret (aged 16) was already in Melbourne, having arrived prior to her parents, Daniel and Winifred CULLOO, who arrived by the “Agricola” from Cork on 3rd October 1841. Margaret was working as a domestic servant in Melbourne. She wed George ROBINSON in St James CofE Church, in Melbourne, on 1st January 1842.
General:
Margaret was a domestic servant to Mr Benjamin in Collins Street Melbourne. She came to Australia prior to the rest of her family.
In 1842 when George and Margaret were married there were only approx. 14,000 people in Victoria, 6000 in Melbourne.
Prior to 1853 the records that exist are church records of baptisms. It is possible to have up to 3 numbers for one person!
Note the numbers for Napoleon, James Brazier and George Hodgkin - 26232, 26233 and 26234. Perhaps they were christened on the same day. A trip to Melbourne would not have been an easy one.
There is also mention of Church of England and Roman Catholic Denomination. It seems that George was C of E and Margaret Catholic. Margaret signed her Marriage Certificate with an "X" as she was illiterate- not uncommon for those times. Margaret learnt to write later on in life.
George and Margaret’s life was tumultuous finally resulting in divorce in 1867. The divorce was messy with arguments over accused adultery and domestic violence. Margaret actually ended up in gaol unable to pay a good behaviour bond issued over a violent argument that spilled into the street. In those days women had no money of their own.
After the divorce Margaret married Arthur McKenna in the Catholic Church. George was actually still alive but she must have either lied to the Priest or perhaps the original marriage in St James Cathedral (Church of England) was probably not recognised by the Catholic Church.

He was leading a bicycle along the side of the road about 7.45, when a motor car travelling in the same direction crashed into him, inflicting lacerations, chiefly on the forehead and over the right eye, and shock. "DUEL FOUGHT WITH POLICE
Five Years' Gaol For Youth
TOWNSVILLE. Monday.
A boy, who engaged in a shooting duel with Queensland police and American Army officers, was to-day sentenced to five years' detention, when he came before Justice Douglas in the Criminal Court.
Kevin Morris, 15 years 10 months, had pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to shoot, Plain Clothes Constable Patrick Carroll.
The police said that Morris and his brother were orphans. They had escaped from the State Children's Department, stole rifles from an Australian military depot and were seen near Mt. St. John on February 7.
Resisting arrest, they engaged in a shooting duel with local police and three American Army officers."

Townsville Daily Bulletin (Qld.) - Thursday 14 May 1936 - News item
"Two infants, Gordon Morris, aged three and a half years, and Valerie Morris, aged eighteen months, were the victims of an alleged 'hit and run' motorist in Philip Street, Hermit Park, about seven o'clock last night. The father of the children was wheeling them along the street in a perambulator, when, It is alleged, a motor car swerved across In front of him, and missing him, hit the perambulator, which was carried nine paces along the road and smashed. The motorist, it is stated, did not stop, and it is understood the police were searching for him last night. The ambulance were quickly on the spot and the unfortunate victims were conveyed to the General Hospital. Enquiries at the hospital at a late hour last night elicited the information that though no bones had apparently been broken, the condition of the children was not very good, though it was a little early to diagnose their cases, and there was every prospect of the children being all right again in a short while."

General information from Jenny Holmes:
"Alfred and Eva saw an incredible number of changes in their lives. E.g. Cars, telephones, televisions, computers etc.
Eva readily embraced the new technology but Alfred was rather reluctant. He preferred the old briquette heater to the new gas one; a good walk rather than a trip in the car. He hated lifts and would choose to use stairs.
Alfred's stories of his younger days included wagging school to go swimming in the Merri Creek and scams to get into football matches for nothing. He lost the middle finger of one hand in an accident at work but in those days no workers compensation existed. He was just lucky to keep his job. He was proud of the unions fight for a 40 hour week and expounded the view of "One man, one job".
Holiday's consisted of 3 days off a year, Christmas Day, Good Friday and Butcher's Picnic."

ON FOOT TO IPSWICH The late Edward Young (Senior), at that period had no horse handy, and as it was necessary for him to reach Ipswich on a certain day, he ran and walked the whole way. Leaving The White Swamp just before daylight he was in Ipswich before sundown. The late George Fletcher, then a lad of 15 years took a bullock dray loaded with potatoes along this route, to Ipswich. Moorgerah Homestead was the first dwelling at that time from The White Swamp. This was no mean feat for a lad alone."

"MISSING BOY FOUND...
TOWNSVILLE, May 30. — After wandering for over 16 hours in cold and darkness, Ronald James Beecheno, 3 years, was found sound and well at 8.20 a.m. today."
Townsville Daily Bulletin (Qld.) - Saturday 31 May 1952
"RONALD BEECHENO SAFE AFTER 16 HOURS HUNT
First Words "Where's Mummy"
After wandering for over 16 anguished and cold hours in the Black River area, three-year-old Ronald James Beecheno, of Bell Street, South Townsville, was found safe and. well by searchers at 8.20 a.m. on Friday.
Gravel-rashed, tired, and a little frightened, Ronald's first words to Mr. V. Cullen, of Edward Street, West End, who discovered him, were: "Where's Mummy?"
The boy's father, Mr. Leonard Beecheno, searched throughout the night with more than 700 volunteers Detective Senior Sergeant W. J. Cronau supervised the search and was assisted by 12 other police officers.
Ronald had wandered from his parents at the annual Waterside Workers' Picnic on Thursday at approximately 4.30 p.m.
Except for two hours before day-break on Friday, when search parties stopped for a much needed rest, the hunt was continuous from 5.20 p.m. on Thursday.
The child was first seen on Friday morning by Mr. V. Cullen, a 47-year-old waterside worker of Edward Street, West End.
Cullen, with Mr. R. K. Spalane, also a watersider, of West End, had been searching for the boy since 8.30 p.m. on Thursday.
STORY TOLD
On Friday afternoon, when Ronald was safe at home with his mother. Mr. Cullen told the story of the recovery.
He said that at the picnic on Thursday there were a few announcements over the loudspeaker asking for lost children. They were found within a few minutes after the calls.
When Ronald was announced as being lost, not much notice was taken as it was thought he would return within a short while, as the other children had done.
Mr. Cullen said he left the picnic with Mr. Spalane at about 4.30 p.m. They had forgotten about the announcement concerning the lost three-year-old.
TORCHES USED
At home he heard messages requesting all waterside workers to join in the search for a missing three-year-old in the Kulburn area.
Mr. Cullen immediately informed Mr. Spalane of the request. Together, they left in Spalane's truck for the grounds, arriving there at about 8.30 p.m.
Equipped with torches, the two men joined another party of about 30, and began their search.
Walking along a branch road leading to the beach, the party thought they heard a child's cry, but were unable to trace the sound. Further on, they discovered tracks in the soft ground, and the party continued to search in that area.
Slowly the searchers forged on to the Black River, but found no sign of the boy other than the tracks. Then, on returning, they heard distinctly a voice say, "Mummy." That was about 12.30 a.m.
Every searcher was shouting the boy's name, with the result it was difficult to trace the direction from which the sound came.
ALL LISTENED
Suddenly, when news of the voice spread along the line, there was silence as everyone listened for the voice again. Then it drifted through the darkness: "Mummy!"
At 2.45 a.m. Cullen's party met Detective Cronau, and it was decided then to halt the search until daybreak.
Cullen and Spalane arrived back at West End at 3.30 a.m. Two hours later, with hundreds of others, including Detective Cronau, they resumed the search.
SAW FOOTPRINT
The two men began their search at the spot where they had discovered the footprint the night before. Fifty yards further on they stopped the truck and walked up the bank of the creek tor about 50 yards. There they noticed another footprint.
This made them feel sure that the boy was still alive, and they continued the search with new hope. The time now was about 6.45 a.m.
They notified Detective Cronau, and brought him and others back to the creek. Stretched out in a line, they walked along the creek bank.
"THERE HE IS"
After another hour of continuous searching, Cullen called to Spalane: "There he is, that's him."
About 20 yards away, wearing long trousers and a sweater, was the three-year-old, covered from head to foot with spear grass seeds. He was walking to the railway line, which was about 2½ miles away.
When he heard the noise behind him he turned. His lip dropped, and he said, "Where's Mummy?" After a pause he said, "I hope Mummy doesn't beat me for running away?"
Happy that they had found him the men carried him back to the truck, and returned him to his father, who had been searching all night.
Detective Cronau came forward and handed the boy some money. "Here," he said, "buy an ice-cream sometime to-day."
The long tiring search was ended. Ronald's father returned with him to Townsville, and the tired searchers went home to rest."

The Crown Prosecutor. Mr. Quinn, stated, that it was the desire of the prisoner to be dealt with while he was in Townsville.
THE CHARGE
The Crown Prosecutor then presented an indictment charging James Edward Woodbridge (39) "that, at Ravenswood, during the months of April and May, 1934, he committed a serions offence upon a girl under the age of 17 years." Accused pleaded guilty.
Mr. Quinn said that the police report showed that accused was a single man. He was a native of Mt. Morgan, and a miner, by occupation, having followed mining in various parts of Queensland. He was also engaged for a short time in the printing trade and on railway construction, and in 1914 he enlisted for the war.
WAR INJURY.
He was wounded in the head and returned to Queensland after the signing of the Armistice. Since then he had been engaged in prospecting, and he was a hard working man with no criminal record. The girl in the case was anxious to marry accused, and he to marry her, and apparently the mother had withdrawn her hostility towards accused, but the father was still adamant Accused intended using further endeavors to persuade the father to consent to his marrying the girl. The girl will be 17 years in February, and Detective, Harold stated that she looks every day her age.
JUDGMENT.
His Honor sentenced accused to six months' imprisonment with, hard labor, to be suspended upon accused entering into his own recognisance of £50 to be of good behavior for 12 months."
