Thomas' father was Thomas James and his mother was Mary Davis. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, David, Elvira, Annie, Iuaima?, Damina, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 2 in 1863.

  According to the Victorian BD&M, Thomas died, aged 3, in Victoria Australia, in 1863. Reg. No. 1863/8625. His mother's name was recorded as Mary James.
