General Notes

In 1850, William and Mary were residents of Perry Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census.
In 1860, William and Mary were residents of Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census.
In 1870, William and Mary were residents of Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census.
In 1880, William and Mary were residents of Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census with children David T, Bell, John W.,
and Joseph H.
William Henry Harrison Shields left a will on 8 april 1899 at Monroe Co.,
Indiana, and it contained:
I, William Shields of Monroe County, Indiana, being of sound and
disposing mind and memory and being over the age of 21 years, do hereby
make and publish this as my last will and testament hereby revoking and
making void all wills by me here before made.
Item One--I will and direct that after my death that my body be decently
interred as my family may direct and that all my just debts and funeral
expenses be paid by my executor hereinafter named.
Item Two--I will and direct that after the payment of all my debts as
aforesaid that all my property both real and personal be sold by my said
executor, the personal at public sale on terms as my executor deems best
for my children, and the real estate at either public or private sale as
he deems best and that said executor hereby has full power to sell said
real estate without first producing an order of court therefrom and that
he shall hereunder have full power to convey the same by deed of warranty
to the purchaser or purchasers thereof as fully  as I might or could do
if in life.
Item Three--I will and direct that the proceeds of the sale of my
property both real and personal shall be equally divided between my
children then in life and to the descendants of such as my be dead to
share alike therin, the grandchildren to have only the portion that would
have descended to their parent if living.
Item Four--I hereby nominate and appoint my son, John Shields, as
executor of this my last will and testament.
Given under my hand and seal this 8th day of April 1899.
Witnesses were Wlater E. Hottel and George M. Deckard. Will proven on
April 22, 1901.
In 1900, William was a resident of Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana,
at the time of the Census with son Joseph, his daughter Nellie, and grand
children Florence and William Pennington living with him.
William Henry Harrison's obituary appeared on 16 April 1901 in the
Bloomington Courier Newspaper, Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana, and it
read;
"Willaim Shields, aged 82, a well known farmer who resides seven miles
south of the city, died at 11:30 yesterday of heart trouble. He had been
in ill health for a number of years and death came as a welcome relief
from suffering. He was the father of the following children Mrs. A. J.
Lampkins, David Shields, Taylor Shields, John and Joseph Shields, Mrs
Allen Carter and Mrs. Hall of this county, and Mrs. Phillip Bond of
Morgantown and Mrs George Wampler of Hayes, Illinois. The deceased was a
member of the Friendship Baptist church, and lived a conscientious
Christian life. He came here from Kentucky sixty years ago and has
resided in the county continously ever since. Mr. Shields was born in
Kentucky. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from
the family residence in charge of R. A. Fulk. The burial will be at the
home graveyard."
