David Thomas was born on September 17th, 1842 in Monroe County, Indiana. David Thomas' father was William Henry Harrison Shields and his mother was Mary Ellen Hudlin. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named William Taylor, John Wesley, Joseph H., George E., Mary Elizabeth, Martha Jane, Sarah Angelina, Lucy A., Julia C., Laura A. and Belle Marie. He was the oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 83 on September 11th, 1926 in Monroe County, Indiana. wagons, stayed there all winter. David visited his sister Julia Wampler
(Mrd. George Wampler) of Hays, Illinois. He also traveled to Missouri.

in Salt Creek in 1870 Census and lived near Paynetown, Indiana.
