Mary Elizabeth was born on August 12th, 1844 in Monroe County, Indiana. Mary Elizabeth's father was William Henry Harrison Shields and her mother was Mary Ellen Hudlin. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. She had five brothers and six sisters, named David Thomas, William Taylor, John Wesley, Joseph H., George E., Martha Jane, Sarah Angelina, Lucy A., Julia C., Laura A. and Belle Marie. She was the second oldest of the twelve children.-
