Thomas Shields 
Thomas was born on September 19th, 1838 in Monroe County, Indiana. Thomas' father was Joseph Shields and his mother was Sarah "Sally" Masterson. His paternal grandparents were David Shields and UNKNOWN Unknown; his maternal grandparents were Caleb Masterson and Jenny Champ. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Henry Harrison, David W., James Madison, Joseph Lindsey, Sarah, Nancy L. and Joann. He was the youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 59 on August 19th, 1898 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried in Knight Ridge Cemetery, Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana.General Notes
Thomas was a Pvt. in 32nd Indiana Regiment during the Civil War. He
enlisted at Columbus, Indiana and served from September 23, 1864 to May
8, 1865. He was mustered out at Indianapolis, Indiana, and became a
farmer in Monroe County.
In 1870, Thomas and Sarah were residents of Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census with his mother, Sarah Shields age 75
living with them.
In 1880, Thomas and Sarah were residents of Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census with children India, Paris, Dory, and
Monroe.
His cause of death is listed as heart disease.
