General Notes

In 25 September 1850, James and Martha were residents of Salt Creek Twp.,
Monroe Co., Indiana, at the time of the Census with sons Lewis W. 5yrs,
George W. 3yrs, and William C. 2 yrs.
In 1860, James and Martha were residents of Clear Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census.
In 1870, James and Martha were residents of Perry Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census.
In 1880, James and Mary were residents of Clear Creek Twp., Monroe Co.,
Indiana, at the time of the Census and his Father's birthplace was listed
as PA and his Mother's as Scot. I believe that the reference to PA hould
refer to Pittsylvania County, Virginia. I don't know about Scot as I am
sure Sarah Masterson was not born in Scotland.
James Madison's obituary appeared on 13 July 1897 in the Bloomington
Telephone, Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana, and it read;
"James Shields, a well known farmer living 9 miles outheast of town, died
suddenly at noon Sunday. Mr. Shields was 76 years of age and had been
enjoying good health. He had eaten a hearty dinner and had just arose
from the table, when without a word he fell and expired instantly. Mr.
Shields was one of the old pioneers of the county and one of the most
honored and highly respected citizens of Clear Creek Township. He leaves
a wife and family of grown children to mourn his death. The remains were
interred at the Shields graveyard 9 miles south of town, Monday
afternoon."
