Isaac was born in 1859 in Indiana. Isaac's father was James Madison Shields and his mother was Martha J. Sciscoe. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Louis W., George Washington, William C., John Thomas, James K. Polk, David Jefferson, Sarah Elizabeth, Nancy Jane, Mary Alice and Delitha Belle. He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children. He had four half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Joseph Lenzy, Hiram Martin, Grover Cleveland, Paris Everett "Jack", Estella Martha, Mamie Alma, Infant, Izella Ethel, Maude Emiline, Rosezetta Frances and Nancy Pearl.-
