Hiram Martin was born on November 8th, 1882 in Monroe County, Indiana. Hiram Martin's father was James Madison Shields and his mother was Mary Jane Heltonburg. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson; his maternal grandparents were Hiram Martin Heltonburg and Nancy Sowders. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph Lenzy, Grover Cleveland, Paris Everett "Jack", Estella Martha, Mamie Alma, Infant, Izella Ethel, Maude Emiline, Rosezetta Frances and Nancy Pearl. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children. He had seven half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Louis W., George Washington, William C., John Thomas, James K. Polk, Isaac, David Jefferson, Sarah Elizabeth, Nancy Jane, Mary Alice and Delitha Belle. He died at the age of 23 on September 2nd, 1906 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried on September 3rd, 1906 in Knight Ridge Cemetery, Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana.-
