His paternal grandparents were David Shields and UNKNOWN Unknown; his maternal grandparents were Caleb Masterson and Jenny Champ. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Henry Harrison, David W., James Madison, Thomas, Sarah, Nancy L. and Joann. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
