Charles H. was born on November 15th, 1848 in Indiana. Charles H.'s father was Joseph Lindsey Shields and his mother was Eliza Jane Whitsell. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Joseph Leonard, John G., James, David, George Washington, Mary E. and Sarah Cynthia. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 65 on April 15th, 1914 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried on April 16th, 1914 in Knight Ridge Cemetery, Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana.-
