Sarah Cynthia was born in November 1874 in Indiana. Sarah Cynthia's father was Joseph Lindsey Shields and her mother was Eliza Jane Whitsell. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. She had six brothers and a sister, named Charles H., Joseph Leonard, John G., James, David, George Washington and Mary E.. She was the youngest of the eight children.-
