William was born in 1776 in Billinge and his baptism took place on February 18th, 1776 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1 2  William's father was James Mather and his mother was Ann Berrington.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joshua, James, John, Peter, Ann, Tabitha and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 72 in March 1848 in Billinge.  He was buried on March 19th, 1848 in Billinge.2 3 





William's first family with Betty Cowley

‌William and Betty were married in a religious ceremony on August 14th, 1804 in Wigan.2  They had two sons named William and Benjamin.  The family line is yet to be completed.


William's second family with Ann Mather

‌William and Ann were married in a religious ceremony on March 14th, 1841 at St. Mary (Deane).5   They had a biological son and two biological daughters, named William, Margaret and Sarah.  They also had an adopted daughter named Tabitha.  There are no more children.
