James was born in 1771 in Billinge and his baptism took place on March 3rd, 1771 at St. Aidan (Billinge).¹

James' father was James Mather and his mother was Ann Berrington. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joshua, John, William, Peter, Ann, Tabitha and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 83 in March 1854 in Billinge. His burial was on March 18th, 1854 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²

  These records must surely be mixed up: The James that died in Billinge, Wigan was 83, not 49. However, GRO confirms these data. James must have died in Bolton, which would explain him missing in 1851.

- In 1841, James (70) was at Birchley Gate, Upholland with 6 children: William (40), Thomas (30), Joshua (20), Richard (15), Ellen (25) and Margaret (25)
  
  In 1854, James died. In hie Will (proved 24 Jan 1855) he leaves his estate to sons William, James, Thomas and Joshua and daughters Ann, Catherine, Mary and Ellen and their families.
