William was born in 1846 in Billinge.1   William's father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington; his maternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret (Peggy) Mather. He had two sisters named Margaret and Sarah. He had an adopted sister named Tabitha. He had two half-brothers named William and Benjamin.
