William was widowed when he married a much younger Ann Mather in 1841. We know their ages from the 1841 census.
Who was he married to earlier? William Married Betty Cowley, both of Upholland in 1804. This is close to Billinge so is likely to be him. Their witness was John Mather. The death confirms her age and marrage of William from Orrell. However, Betty is the daughter of George and Betty Holme (see Benjamin's baptism).
