Thomas was born in September 1846 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Rosannah Peak.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Alice, Christianna and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Samuel, Ellen, Hannah, Alice, Hannah, Sarah and Clara.

‌Thomas and Jane were married in a religious ceremony on November 28th, 1868 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
