Ralph was born in 1826 in Bolton and his christening took place on October 15th, 1826 at St. Peter's (Bolton).¹

Ralph's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ellen Rigby. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Mather. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Samuel, George, James, Marianne and Alice. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 70 on February 27th, 1896 in Bolton. His burial was in February 1896 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.²

  12 Nov 1853, Ralph, already a widower of Little Bolton, married Sarah Butler the daughter of James Makin. His farther is recorded as Samuel. He lived at 52 Halliwell Road.
  
  In 1882 when Alice married, she was living at 38 Halliwell Road.
