James was born in 1832 in Bolton and his baptism took place on November 4th, 1832 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ellen Rigby.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Mather. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Samuel, Ralph, George, Marianne and Alice.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
