Samuel's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ellen Rigby.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Mather. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Ralph, George, James, Marianne and Alice.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 16 in November 1840 in Bolton.  He was buried on November 20th, 1840 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²
