Thomas' father was Ellis Mather and his mother was Ann Thornley.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund (Edwin) Mather and Mary <unknown>. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named James, William, John, Ellis, Peter, Charles, David, Moses, Betty, Alice and Betty.  He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 68 in March 1877 in Clayton-le-Moors.  He was buried on March 14th, 1877 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).^3 3
