Elizabeth, known as Betty, was born in 1835 in Little Hulton.1  Betty's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Alice Bradshaw.  Her paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. She had three brothers and a sister, named William, John, Ellis and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
