John was born in 1801 in Worsley and his baptism took place there on April 19th, 1801.1  John's father was Ellis Mather and his mother was Ann Thornley.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund (Edwin) Mather and Mary <unknown>. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Ellis, Thomas, Peter, Charles, David, Moses, Betty, Alice and Betty.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
