Alice was born in March 1796 in Worsley and her baptism took place there on March 27th, 1796.1  Alice's father was Ellis Mather and her mother was Ann Thornley.  Her paternal grandparents were Edmund (Edwin) Mather and Mary <unknown>. She had nine brothers and two sisters, named James, William, John, Ellis, Thomas, Peter, Charles, David, Moses, Betty and Betty.  She was the third oldest of the twelve children.
