Richard was born in March 1858 in Astley Bridge and his baptism took place on April 4th, 1858 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).1 2  Richard's father was James Mather and his mother was Susanna (Susan) Whalley.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles. He had six brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Giles, Nathaniel, Fred, Lewis, Hannah, Ellen, Alice and Rachel.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 3 in September 1861 in Sharples.  He was buried on September 7th, 1861 in Astley Bridge.3
