Frederick, known as Fred, was born in June 1863 in Astley Bridge and his baptism took place on November 26th, 1865 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).1 2  Fred's father was James Mather and his mother was Susanna (Susan) Whalley.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles. He had six brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Giles, Richard, Nathaniel, Lewis, Hannah, Ellen, Alice and Rachel.  He was the second youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1865 in Bolton.  He was buried on December 2nd, 1865 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).3
