Lewis was born in June 1866 in Little Bolton.¹

Birth Notes

Lewis' father was James Mather and his mother was Susanna (Susan) Whalley. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles. He had six brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Giles, Richard, Nathaniel, Fred, Hannah, Ellen, Alice and Rachel. He was the youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 2 in June 1868 in Bolton. He was buried on May 21st, 1868 in Astley Bridge.²³
