There are two John and Betty families, clearly demonstrated by the births of both Richard and John in 1800, only two months apart. There are marriages in 1790 and 1796. It was the other John (his cousin) who married Betty Baxter (because brother Thomas was witness; Also children names after siblings).

John and Betty were married in a religious ceremony on February 21st, 1796 in Wigan witnessed by William Banks & Thomas Greenhough.1 They had six sons and five daughters, named Thomas, John, John, Peter, James, William, Ann, Margaret, Hannah, Elizabeth and Alice. There are possibly more children.
