Alice's father was John Mather and her mother was Elin (Ellen) Shaw.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Peter, John, Richard, Elizabeth and Peggy.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
