Peter's father was John Mather and his mother was Elin (Ellen) Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Richard, Alice, Elizabeth and Peggy.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
