Elizabeth's father was John Mather and her mother was Elin (Ellen) Shaw.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Peter, John, Richard, Alice and Peggy.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
