James' father was John Mather and his mother was Betty Houghton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elin (Ellen) Shaw. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, John, Peter, William, Ann, Margaret, Hannah, Elizabeth and Alice.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven known children.  He died at the age of 68 in November 1879 in Billinge.  He was buried on November 21st, 1879 at St. Aidan (Billinge).¹
