John's father was John Mather and his mother was Betty Houghton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elin (Ellen) Shaw. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, Peter, James, William, Ann, Margaret, Hannah, Elizabeth and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the eleven known children.  He died at 6 months old in June 1799 in Billinge.  He was buried on July 6th, 1799 at All Saints (Wigan).¹
