Her paternal grandparents were George Mather and Mary Marsh; her maternal grandparents were Guest Guest and Martha Ann Eckersley. She had three brothers and five sisters, named George, Harry, Fred, Eleanor, Emily, Martha, Lilly and May. She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
