John was born in January 1831 in Entwistle and his baptism took place on January 2nd, 1831.1 2  John's father was Samuel Kay and his mother was Nancy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Samuel, Samuel, Kitty, Elizabeth, Alice and Ann.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 54 in March 1885 in Sharples.  He was buried on March 26th, 1885 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).3 4

‌John and Ann were married in a religious ceremony on July 11th, 1858 at Christ Church, Walmsley witnessed by John Lowe and Elizabeth Kay.6  They had a son and three daughters, named John, Elizabeth, Nancy and Mary.  There are no more children.
