Samuel's father was Samuel Kay and his mother was Nancy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, George, Samuel, Kitty, Elizabeth, Alice and Ann.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in April 1847 in Turton.  He was buried on April 22nd, 1847 at St. Anne (Turton).^3 1
