Elizabeth's father was John Kay and her mother was Ann Lowe. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Kay and Nancy Mather. She had a brother and two sisters, named John, Nancy and Mary. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 20 in September 1880 at Toppings. Her burial was on September 17th, 1880 at St. Anne (Turton).²
