Thomas' father was James Brooks and his mother was Alice Mather. His paternal grandparents were Robert Brooks and Ann or Alice; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Mather. He had five brothers and two sisters, named George, Charles, James, Robert, Samuel, Alice and Happy. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named John.
