Samuel was born in December 1858 in Little Bolton and his christening took place on February 27th, 1859 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Samuel's father was James Brooks and his mother was Alice Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Brooks and Ann or Alice; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Mather. He had five brothers and two sisters, named George, Charles, James, Thomas, Robert, Alice and Happy.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named John.  He died at the age of 52 in January 1911 in Little Bolton.3
