Ermengarde was born about 0975 in Lower Lorraine, France.  Ermengarde's father was Prince Charles de Laon of France and her mother was Adelheid de Ardenne.  Her paternal grandparents were King Louis ("Transmarinus", "d'Outre-Mer") IV of France and Princess Gerberge Auceps von Sachsen of the Germans; her maternal grandparents were Count Godefroy ("the Old", "The Captive") d'Ardennes in the Bidgau and Princess Mathilde Billung von Sachsen. She had a brother and two sisters, named Charles, Ermentrude and Gerberge. She had a half-brother named Ludwig.  She died in 1012.

‌Ermengarde and Albert were married in a religious ceremony about 0990.  They had two daughters named Erlende and Hedwig.
