Charles was born about 0950 in Laon, Aisne, Picardy, France.  Charles' father was King Louis ("Transmarinus", "d'Outre-Mer") IV of France and his mother was Princess Gerberge Auceps von Sachsen of the Germans.  His paternal grandparents were King Charles ("the Simple") III of France and Princess Edgifu of Wessex; his maternal grandparents were Emperor Henry ("the Fowler") I and Saint Matilda of Ringelheim. He had a sister named Mathilde.  He was the younger of the two children. He had four half-sisters named Gerberge, Alberada, Alberade and Gerberge.  He died in Kerker, Orlâeans, France.  He was buried in St. Servatius, Maastricht.


Charles' first family with Adelheid de Ardenne

‌Charles and Adelheid were married in a religious ceremony before 0979.  They had a son and three daughters, named Charles, Ermentrude, Gerberge and Ermengarde.


Charles' second family with Adelaise de Vermandois

They had a son named Ludwig.
