Mathilde Billung was born in Ardenne, France.  Mathilde Billung's father was Duke Herman Billung von Saxony and her mother is Hildegardis von Westerbourg.  Her paternal grandfather was Count Billung von Stubenshorn of Saxony and her paternal grandmother is Ermengarde de Nantes; her maternal grandfather was Count Lothar von Stade II of Walbeck and her maternal grandmother is Princess Swanhilde von Hamaland of Stade. She had a brother and a sister, named Benno and Schwanhilde.  She died on May 25th, 1008.

‌Mathilde Billung and "the Old", "The Captive" were married in a religious ceremony in 0951.  They had four sons and five daughters, named Gonzelon, Frederick, "the Grand", Hermann, Adelheid, Irmgard, Ermentrude, Gerberge and Ermentrude.
