Gonzelon, known as "the Grand", was born in 0967 in Verdun, Meuse, France.  "the Grand"'s father was Count Godefroy ("the Old", "The Captive") d'Ardennes in the Bidgau and his mother was Princess Mathilde Billung von Sachsen.  His paternal grandfather was Count Gozelon von Bidgau of Ardennes and his paternal grandmother is Uda de Metz; his maternal grandfather was Duke Herman Billung von Saxony and his maternal grandmother is Hildegardis von Westerbourg. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Gonzelon, Frederick, Hermann, Adelheid, Irmgard, Ermentrude, Gerberge and Ermentrude. He had a half-sister named Bertha.  He died at the age of 77 on April 19th, 1044.

‌"the Grand" and Urraca were married in a religious ceremony in 0993.  They had a son and two daughters, named "the Bearded", Regelinda and Oda.
