Irmgard was born about 0970 in Hammerstein, (Now Czarne), Koszalin, Poland.  Irmgard's father was Count Godefroy ("the Old", "The Captive") d'Ardennes in the Bidgau and her mother was Princess Mathilde Billung von Sachsen.  Her paternal grandfather was Count Gozelon von Bidgau of Ardennes and her paternal grandmother is Uda de Metz; her maternal grandfather was Duke Herman Billung von Saxony and her maternal grandmother is Hildegardis von Westerbourg. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Gonzelon, Frederick, "the Grand", Hermann, Adelheid, Ermentrude, Gerberge and Ermentrude. She has a half-sister named Bertha.

‌Irmgard and Udo were married in a religious ceremony in Hammerstein, (Now Czarne), Koszalin, Poland.  They had a daughter named Irmentrud.
