Catherine was born before 1500 in Mohun's Ottery, Devon.1   Catherine's father was Sir Edmund Carew and her mother was Catherine Huddesfield.  Her paternal grandparents were Nicholas Carew and Margaret Dynham; her maternal grandparents were Sir William Huddesfield and Catherine Courtenay. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Sir William, Sir Thomas, George, Sir Gawen, Anne, Dorothy and Isabelle.  She was the youngest of the eight children.

‌Catherine and Sir Philip were married in a religious ceremony about 1513.1   They had two sons and four daughters, named John, Sir Arthur, Joan, Katherine, Elizabeth and Frances.
